Statement:

Reverb is the bouncing of sound waves. The original waves bounce back with added information about surfaces they reverberated from–which can also describe the space. Similar to an echo or delay, reverb multiplies sounds in superposition increasing both the volume and energy.

The layering of sound is a key counterpart to this exhibition featuring multiple-exposure color photograms of audio/visual recording devices and natural materials. Mural sized photograms of rocks, leaves, dirt and branches–signifiers of life’s continuum and key players in nature's cycles, are juxtaposed with smaller framed photograms of vintage tools such as cassettes, cameras and record albums from the analog era. Such nostalgic products used to record life in both sound and vision enable reverberations to the past while the natural elements ground viewers to the present season.

All color photograms in Reverb are created in total darkness by briefly exposing physical items to filtered light while placed on top of photographic film. This occurs over multiple instances with the objects shifted for each subsequent exposure as the film “remembers” and blends the shapes and colors it receives. Chance plays a significant collaborative role in the outcome.

To add to the visual experience there will be both a record player and cassette player in the gallery space, each with a curated selection of albums or tapes. Visitors are encouraged to play both simultaneously exploring odd combinations and sonic simultaneity. Three meditation cushions will be in the space for visitors to use.  A live performance focused on sonic reverb by Doug Fogelson and Yuri Basho Lane is scheduled November 9th at 12:00 noon.
