Chicago artists have something to say. Taking on the role of cultural commentator, facilitator, advocate or activist, many artists in Chicago are actively engaged with their communities and the pressing and often highly-charged social issues of our day. Celebrating this artistic approach, Elmhurst Art Museum’s inaugural Biennial, Chicago Statements, provides nineteen artists with a wide-reaching public platform for their messages, their voices and their revelations that address imbalances of power, access and resources. Through drawings, sculpture, video, photography, text and documentation of public projects, the Biennial intends to raise awareness, encourage discussion and promote the power of individual and collective expression and healing.
Participants include Lise Haller Baggesen, Tom Burtonwood and Holly Holmes, Doug Fogelson, Maria Gaspar, Matthew Hoffman, Jesse Howard, Jenny Kendler, Kirsten Leenaars, Faheem Majeed, Billy McGuinness, Christopher Meerdo, Matt Morris, Cheryl Pope, John Preus, Alison Ruttan, Aram Han Sifuentes, Edra Soto and Amanda Williams. Topics explored by these artists include feminism and motherhood, new technologies, community building, race and power, gun violence, gentrification, poverty, war, environmentalism and immigration, among others.
Elmhurst Art Museum Biennial: Chicago Statements will fill the majority of the Museum’s building and will fittingly present Lise Haller Baggesen’s interactive installation Mothernism (a play on motherhood and modernism) in one wing of the Mies van der Rohe-designed McCormick House. Including a tent, silk banners, an audio component and a disco ball, Mothernism encourages conversations about identity, inclusiveness and art-making. Another participatory work includes Tom Burtonwood and Holly Holmes’ Copy Shop, an installation highlighting 3D scanning and printing and its transformative effect on object design and production. Jesse Howard’s new charcoal and watercolor portraits of African Americans and Kirsten Leenaars’ recent video #thisistomorrow respond to the current climate of violence, disenfranchisement and abuse of power and serve as a call to action to imagine a better future.
A lively roster of weekly public programs will include artist talks, performances, concerts, exhibition tours, a book discussion and unique workshops led by many of the Biennial artists, including Aram Han Sifuentes’ U.S. Citizenship Test Project, aimed at non-citizen immigrants to provide information about the process of gaining American citizenship and to sew samplers. Partnerships with schools and local institutions are also in the works. Elmhurst Art Museum Biennial: Chicago Statements is curated by EAM Chief Curator & Director of Public Programs Staci Boris.
The Safelight Photographic Catalog is now available. High public demand for used analog photographic equipment (along with the boxes of said gear given to me by a friend departing the country, who got it from another photographer that had her father's old darkroom gear) necessitated the creation of this catalog. Divided into three sections of Paper & Film, Processing, and Darkroom the catalog showcases everything you need to do it the old way. Expired chemistry, film, and paper are on display as are the gear- even a few choice negatives found in the archive and one Kodachrome color portrait. Contact me for your copy today!

PERFORMANCE/INTERVENTION AT EXPO CHICAGO "Water Works":
Water Works invites a select group of contemporary artists - Doug Fogelson, Jenny Kendler, Meg Leary, Aspen Mays, Linda Tegg, and Alex Wieder - to create ephemeral interventions at EXPO CHICAGO using water as their only resource. The series revolves around Water Light Graffiti, a digital surface that illuminates when touched by water. Created by Paris-based artist Antonin Fourneau, Water Light Graffiti merges the immediacy of street-art with the sophistication of digital technology and the movement of the cinematic screen.
Participating artists will use the surface of Water Light Graffiti as inspiration to showcase their unique perspectives. The resulting Water Works will trigger creative dialogue and encourage viewers to reflect upon the importance of art, technology, and the natural world in contemporary culture.
Curated by Giovanni Aloi and Elizabeth Corr, this special series is sponsored by the Water Program at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), an international nonprofit environmental organization committed to raising awareness about the environment through robust interdisciplinary partnerships.
Doug Fogelson and Alex Weider "Set My Bow"
The rainbow is a much-loved symbol among many cultures. It is a meteorological phenomenon of light refracting/reflecting through water droplets in a spectrum of colors made visible to the naked eye. Fogelson and Wieder reference the rainbow arc and its relationships from the current anthropogenic era of "peak water." Working with the water activated LED lights created by Fourneau, the artists use stencils and gels to create patterns that foster consideration of the ephemeral.

OPENLANDS ANNOUNCES DOUG FOGELSON AS ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE
***Year-Long Partnership to Focus on Nature in the Region***
(Chicago – September 15, 2015) Openlands announces that Doug Fogelson is the regional conservation organization’s first Artist-In-Residence. The residency commences late summer 2015 and extends until summer 2016. Fogelson’s residency will focus on natural spaces around the Chicago region in which Openlands has worked in its 52-year history. These will include, but not be limited to, forest preserves, wildlife refuges, and the Openlands Lakeshore Preserve. The residency will culminate in an exhibition, as well as lectures and other events, following the year.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Doug Fogelson, a Chicago based photographic artist who has achieved national acclaim,” said Openlands President and CEO Jerry Adelmann. “Having started as a social justice organization, Openlands’ conservation mission is rooted in people and connecting them to nature where they live. Doug’s images challenge and invite the viewer to see our world in new and evocative ways. We look forward to his unique vision of some of our most beloved landscapes.”
“Working with Openlands is a unique opportunity to experience the rich landscape in our region and visually engage dialog about it,” Fogelson remarks. “I intend to personally learn and feel through a process of regular site visits and studio production over the next four seasons and synthesize a body of work that reflects issues surrounding non-human life to the people living amongst it.”

Gallery X: Doug Fogelson, "Broken Cabinet" September 11 - November 7, 2015
Opening Reception: September 11, 2015, 6-9pm
EXPO Chicago Celebration Sunday Brunch: Sunday September 20, 10am-12pm
Discussion with Giovanni Aloi, Scholar & Author: Saturday, October 10, 2-4pm
In "Broken Cabinet," Chicago artist Doug Fogelson highlights a disconnect between humans and the natural world. In his photograms, the artist places organic items like coral, coyote claws, moths and fox skulls upon photosensitive materials to create candy-colored shadows of these artifacts. Bringing the natural world into the manmade, Fogelson calls attention to the impact that mankind has on the environment; exhibiting the photograms beneath partially shattered glass, the artist emphasizes the fact that it's most often at the hand of humans that various organisms are undergoing extinction.
Fogelson's installation of this series of photograms is of particular importance. In an effort to reflect the vastness of the natural world, the works are displayed in a grid upon a single wall of the gallery. Here, mushrooms, horseshoe crabs, shark teeth and horsehair are presented democratically, reinforcing the artist's message that each organism is of equal importance on earth. In addition to the wallbound works, Fogelson exhibits a vitrine filled with the actual objects indexed in his photograms, sourced from EBay, taxidermists, fishing stores, strange shops and on walks in nature. This collection of natural artifacts is the artist's own "cabinet of curiosities," providing three-dimensional counterparts to the reanimated yet flattened forms of the photograms.

This series looks at reanimating objects via multiple exposures of colored light, blended to make new color mixes. The flora and fauna are representative of species becoming extinct at alarming rates in this Anthropocene era, due mostly to human induced climate change and related abusive actions. By showcasing them under broken glass in candy colors, the viewer is stimulated to look deeper at the quality of their forms.
Fogelson stresses that the objects dictate their own image as they index themselves in the cameraless process he uses with subjects sitting upon light sensitive materials. The agency of light and the work of collecting and composing complete it. States of decomposition are often colorful, and Broken Cabinet reminds us that this beauty carries a cost.
